Biodiversity in our oceans has more effect on our lives than one would expect. Many people don’t pay attention to how we treat our oceans and the effects it has. Not only plastic and pollution play a role in threatening the oceans, bycatch also plays a huge part.
Fishing can cause multiple problems in our oceans. Heavy fishing gear can damage the seafloor. Gears that drag destroy the ocean floor and kill sea life like sea coral, plankton and aquatic plants. Commercial fishing harms marine life. This type of fishing causes an imbalance in the food web. Because of this imbalance, we could lose essential fish like tuna, cod and silverfish. We could also lose animals like the sea turtle.
Without the ocean humans can go extinct. The ocean provides us with things we need to survive. We get 50% of our oxygen from the ocean. The seaweed and other aquatic plants provide us with this. The ocean also supplies us with freshwater without this many people all over the world will not have clean drinking water. These changes to the ocean could be irreversible. We need to bring more awareness to this before it’s too late. We must take care of our planet like it takes care of us.
